Decorating and design – what’s a girl to do! With all the selections available, it is easy for would be decorators to have trouble deciding just where to wade in. Try to begin designing a room with a theme – if you know what you are aiming for, you are much more likely to accomplish that end result! A theme can be anything from a single color to sailing vessels or those brass knobs that caught your eye in a shop once.
Once you’ve picked your theme, it’s time to start coordinating a room that complements that theme, either by blending in soothingly with it, or by standing out in contrast to your theme. Finally, it’s time to accentuate. Throws, pillows, and vases in bright colors, metallics, or shades of black all help to ground and refine and complete a good design. It’s every bit as easy as it sounds.
Just last week I realized it was time to make the spare bedroom into my office. I started by removing all of the items from the room so it became a blank slate for design. Next, I imagined my perfect desk, as that is the center of any well functioning office. Wanting a desk large enough to house both of my monitors and my trusty keyboard I haven’t replaced since college, I realized that a corner desk was going to be my best option.
I had had a birch corner desk in the past, and while I initially considered purchasing a similar desk, I realized that I’ve changed since my old corner desk, so ideally I would have a desk that was sharper and more awesome too. Plus, this office was going to be hip and sleek, a space that would make working feel less taxing. As I pondered these ideas, a shape began to take form: a black corner computer desk. I started researching black corner computer desks right away to see what was available, and within minutes was gazing at a perfectly sleek black corner computer desk online.
I ordered it, and knew that my black corner computer desk was going to set the theme for my home office immediately. From there designing the room was simple. I had the option of keeping the room low contrast or high contrast. Highly contrasting color schemes set a mood of excitement, adventure, and a bit of daring. Low contrasting color schemes soothe the eye by keeping near the same color family. Since this was my office, I wanted to be excited rather than lulled, so I opted for a high contrast look with the perennial favorite theme of “black and white” as my coordinating theme.
To best accomplish this, I left my walls and chair white to give the desk the ‘pop’ it deserved, and then I shopped around for a few smaller elements to tie the theme together. A silhouette framed on the wall provided some black and white artwork, and a metallic figurine on the desk provided some color and shine. Great design doesn’t have to be a great challenge, pick an color, theme, or item you love, like my black corner computer desk, and go from there!
